Nashville's first Madewell to open tonight in Green Hills
Madewell, the edgier, denim-focused sister brand to J.Crew, is opening its first Nashville store tonight at the Mall at Green Hills.
The brand, which started as a denim workwear label in 1937, was revived in 2006 as a womenswear brand by J.Crew CEO Micky Drexler and has grown to more than 75 retail stores across the United States. Tennessee's first Madewell store opened in spring 2013 in Memphis.
Where J.Crew is tailored wool blazers and expertly cuffed button-downs, Madewell is leather moto jackets and loose-fit flannels. Denim remains at the heart of the brand, which recently launched a new L.A.-based denim design studio, and the Nashville outpost will feature a "denim bar." The new fall collection features 47 styles of jeans, starting around $115.
Nashville-based lifestyle blogger James McCoy, the voice behind Bleubird and Motherhood Mag, will be on hand to open the store. The festivities start at 7 pm and will also feature exclusive products from a handful of local makers.
As reported by the NBJ in May, Madewell is one of a handful of new stores coming to the Mall at Green Hills, which has built up its roster of higher-end, luxury brands steadily over the past several years, including Tennessee's first Nordstrom. Earlier this year, the mall kicked off a three-year, multiphase construction project, which will include a new parking deck, a new two-story Dillard’s, demolition of the existing Dillard’s and construction of anywhere between 125,000 and 130,000 square feet of retail space where Dillard’s currently is located.
